As community colleges continue to expand online and in-person course offerings, modality decisions are often framed as matters of student preference. Drawing on interviews with first-year community college students whose secondary education was disrupted by COVID-19, this presentation challenges that assumption. Findings reveal that students rarely express fixed modality preferences; instead, they make course-by-course decisions shaped by prior educational experiences, institutional structures, and competing demands on their time. The study offers insights for colleges seeking to design equitable learning opportunities in the post-pandemic era.
