As elephants are conditioned from birth to believe they cannot break free from a simple rope, many learners experiencing homelessness internalize invisible barriers that limit their potential. This interactive workshop blends neuroscience, storytelling, and practical strategy to help educators identify and dismantle those barriers through trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices.Grounded in Eric Jensen’s research from Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind, this session explores how chronic stress and instability affect memory, motivation, and behavior, and how educators can counteract these effects with intentional engagement, relationships, and empowerment. Using the Bridge Model, attendees will learn strategies to build belonging, restore hope, and strengthen resiliency for students. This session combines evidence-based insights, district-level experience, and deeply human storytelling to transform trauma into triumph.
