Co-designing Equitable Partnerships: How the Community Engagement Initiative 2.0 Is Transforming Policy into Action

California’s Community Engagement Initiative (CEI) 2.0 tasks districts with a critical mandate: move beyond superficial compliance and build authentic, reciprocal partnerships with local communities. This action research presentation highlights how the Lead Agency Partners have utilized a co-design methodology to operationalize CEI 2.0 goals from the ground up. By embedding community partners directly into iterative cycles of inquiry, planning, and reflection, we shifted the traditional power dynamics of district decision-making.Attendees will examine the systematic steps taken to co-create, implement, and evaluate equity-centered engagement strategies. We will share mixed methods data and insights gathered from families, students, and school staff throughout the collaborative process. Grounded in CERA’s "Equity by Design" ethos, this session offers a scalable blueprint for transforming state policy into meaningful local action, providing participants with practical co-design tools and action research frameworks to foster true educational partnership.
