Research shows structured, disciplinary student discussions are among the most effective ways to build both mathematical understanding and academic language for Multilingual Learners (MLLs). Yet many classrooms still rely heavily on teacher-directed, whole-class instruction.This best-practices session presents a practical framework for designing discussion-rich math lessons that engage all students in mathematical sense-making while advancing English language proficiency. Presenters will also share how one California district paired targeted professional development with collaborative lesson study to help teachers shift practices through iterative cycles of planning, teaching, observing, and refining. Participants will leave with concrete strategies aligned with the California Mathematics Framework, ready-to-adapt tools, and ideas for implementing similar supports in their own schools and districts.
