There is a critical and growing gap in the preparation of multilingual education leaders. As multilingual programs continue to expand rapidly across the United States—with programs operating across 50 states—the demand for leaders who have expertise in multilingual education has never been greater. While closely examining the literature in the related fields, it consistently underscores that the success and sustainability of multilingual education programs depend on knowledgeable, critically conscious, well-prepared leaders; yet the field continues to face a shortage of administrators, and educational leaders at all levels, equipped to effectively lead these programs. Developing a strong pathway of multilingual educational leaders is therefore not simply desirable—it is essential to ensuring equitable, high-quality educational opportunities for an increasingly multilingual student population. This convergent mixed-methods study, conducted through the Leadership, Equity, and Access for Languages (LEAL) project, examines the question: What are the necessary dimensions for creating a strategic framework —or ruta— for efficacious multilingual leadership? Drawing on surveys, interviews, and programmatic data, the study identifies key dimensions for recognizing, developing, and sustaining multilingual education leaders. Findings present a multidimensional framework of knowledge, dispositions, and skills that support effective multilingual leadership across educational contexts. The study highlights critical ideological, professional, and community-oriented milestones that characterize multilingual leaders’ developmental pathways and examines indicators of leadership sustainability and momentum over time. Results contribute to the growing knowledge base on multilingual leadership preparation by offering a practical framework for cultivating leaders who advance equity, access, and excellence for multilingual learners and their communities.
